Golu is a traditional folk art displayed during the Hindu festival of Navaratri, which occurs in September or October each year. It is a collection of small, handcrafted dolls that are arranged on a stepped display platform, called the “golu padi.” The dolls are usually made from wood, clay or cloth and depict characters from Hindu mythology and Indian culture. The golu is a way to create a visual representation of stories and legends and the steps of the display symbolize life's journey with a figurine on each step. Visitors to homes where the golu is displayed are offered sweets and snacks, and it is considered good etiquette to exchange gifts. The golu tradition is popular in Southern India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
